Over the years I’ve seen Leslieville change and redefine itself. The intersection of Logan Avenue and Queen Street East just keeps getting better. Some lovely boutique style shops such as the Leslieville Cheese Market, Rowe Farms and the Brick Bakery are now being joined by Leslieville’s first fish market. Owners Dan and Kristen Donovan have opened Hooked, at 888 Queen Street East, which specializes in sustainable seafood.
Through their shop, they’re hoping to encourage more people to try local fish such as pickerel, whitefish and lake trout. Originally from North Bay, Mr. Donovan grew up fishing and eating his catch. But as pollution levels heightened in our lakes, so did consumers’ concern. But strict monitoring and government inspections have determined the toxicity levels of certain Ontario fish to be much improved and quite safe. The store itself looks amazing. Formerly Gallery 888, the Donovans have transformed the space by handcrafting floor to ceiling cabinets, installing new lighting and adding a fresh coat of paint. It is truly a work of art. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about fish and how to purchase, store, and cook it. And if you want to go one step further, the Donovans plan to open the back room of their store to create a workshop where they intend to teach cooking and wine pairing. So get Hooked!
